ZombieDrule thinks..Ever since "The Blair Witch Project" films have been adopting the handy-cam POV style horror films. It was only a matter of time before George A.Romero added zombies to that mix.
"Diary of the Dead" is about a crew of film students shooting their school project out in the middle of the woods. Word breaks out on the TV that the dead have risen and are feeding off the living. The director then decides to search out for his girlfriend and brings the group and camera along with him. After successfully retrieving her the group sets out to meet up with the other members of their crew while all the time doing whatever it takes in order to survive. Shot entirely from the POV of the film camera the students were using "Diary of the Dead" unfortunately falls short of convincing the viewer that this is actually happening as we see it. When done well this technique can be useful in drawing someone into the film and making it easier for them to imagine themselves in that situation. The dialogue wasn't natural, the actors felt like film school students acting (which worked when they were filming their project but unfortunately became less natural when they weren't supposed to be acting), and most of the characters actions didn't stand to reason. On the positive side it did supply a decent number of scary zombies popping out from around the corner successfully making me jump a little. So even though it has a lot of short comings it was a fairly scary film. And had lots of zombies in it. The most important element any ways.
Best Line - "It's funny. You spend so much time resenting your parents, separating yourself, building your own life. But as soon as the shit hits the fan, the only place you want to go is home." Best Weapon - Good old shotgun. |
