Apocalypse of the Dead (AKA Zone of the Dead) was much better than we thought it would be, but still not great. Made in Serbia and staring Ken Foree, this low budget movie proves he can still hit zombies where it hurts. Sure the Dawn of the Dead star is showing his age, and looks a hell of a lot like an aging Laurence Fishburn. You have to give Foree credit for continuing to take roles in zombie movies, how many actors can you think of that have been in more then one zombie movie.

Apocalypse of the Dead has the usual storyline, a highly toxic gas escapes from a train tanker in the station of Pancevo while being transported across Serbia. All but one of the people in the train station get infected by the gas and turn into zombies, they go on a rampage across the city eating, biting and infecting the occupants of the city. This all happens while a band of Interpol agents are transporting a dangerous prisoner to Belgrade, the retiring, the new recruit and the convict have to team up to fight off the hordes. There are some other characters, mostly all very dull, except for maybe the tattooed skinhead who walks around killing the zombies while quoting endless bible scriptures. This psycho easily has the best kill when he uses a harpoon to decapitate a zombie.

The acting is poor, with Ken Foree being easily the most convincing character, followed by the convict who uses his face to do most of the acting. Most of the other character had very strong accents and sometimes it was hard to understand what they where saying. The direction was ok, we have seen a lot worse, but there were the occasional jarring edits and several unexplained plot points. What ever happened to the guy on the boat?

Now lets talk about the zombies, the zombies were pretty good, the effects above average for a film of this budget with plenty of of gory kills and bites.  
The film's finale has a massive zombie battle which is fun, you know in that blood, guts, bullets flying, swords chopping kind of way. But why were all the zombies lying down when they got to this location? Another plot point left unexplained.
